HOW IT STARTED
A Legend remembered
A fearless Indian maiden. A world-famous naturalist. A pioneer in the world of golf architecture. These are the inspirations for Cateechee Event Center.
About 250 years ago, the forests near Hartwell, Georgia were home to an enchanting Choctaw maiden named Cateechee, a slave to the Cherokee. As the story is told, Cateechee fled her oppressors in a daring escape. With her baby in her arms and a band of Cherokee braves on her heels, she plunged over a treacherous waterfall and took refuge on a ledge behind the falls. Assuming she had died, the Cherokee abandoned their pursuit.
One look around the lush, rolling hills of Cateechee and you’ll feel her spirit lives on.

AUDUBON CERTIFIED SIGNATURE SANCTUARY
Nature is at Our Heart
As Georgia’s only Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary, we strive daily to be stewards of the land. Golf courses provide amazing greenspace for education, entertainment, and enjoyment. When managed properly, the ecosystem services golf courses provide are enormous. Our golf course was planned with wildlife habitat at the core. Each hole was built around pre-existing habitats to maintain proper corridors and minimize disturbance. We irrigate the property with treated effluent water from the City of Hartwell, recycling it back into the local ecosystem and allowing the ground to filter the water naturally.
Our world-class facility wanders through 475 undisturbed acres of land in the scenic foothills of Northeast Georgia. We are committed to creating and enhancing the surrounding wildlife habitat and conserving the natural resources in the region. This steadfast commitment has earned Cateechee Event Center the prestigious and highly coveted Audubon International Signature Status.
Cateechee was one of the first signature golf courses in the United States and one of only a handful worldwide to achieve this distinction.
